Our basalt is selected from private coastal farmland in Otago, where volcanic rock has shaped the landscape for millions of years. Each rock’s natural variation and individual character are intentionally retained, ensuring no two finished pieces are ever the same.
Our Story
About Us
Etch & Stone is a family-run workshop created from a simple idea: some images deserve more weight than paper or screen. Our work is about turning meaningful images into objects with presence, texture and permanence. Each piece is shaped and etched by hand, but the stone always leads - its grain, surface and form become part of the finished piece. The result is simple: a natural basalt object, finished by hand and made to last.
Our Process
From earth to finished piece, each Etch & Stone creation moves through a considered, hands-on process shaped by craft and intention. We begin by selecting each stone for its strength, texture, and individual character. Every piece is then cut and refined by hand, with care taken to preserve its natural edges and organic form wherever possible.
The surface is ground and polished to create a clean, smooth face suited for detailed work. Your image is then prepared and laser etched into the stone, transforming it into a lasting impression. Each piece is packaged in a custom laser-cut bamboo box and cushioned with natural material to ensure it arrives safely, with the same care it was created with.
